Wooden sculpture by Swiss artist Marcel “Toto” Meylan, who was a leading artist at Iris Clert’s famous Parisian gallery alongside Arman, Yves Klein, César, Niki de Saint-Phalle, and others. Dalí had nicknamed him “the sculptor of emptiness.” The piece I am offering comes from the “Cows” series created between 1965 and 1966. It comes from the artist’s own collection and is likely one of the first pieces produced and used as a mold for the bronze version, as the artist created variations in three materials: wood, cast iron, and bronze. The piece is signed on the back of the animal’s neck. It has a patina of thick black varnish on wood. The head is removable and swings for a few seconds. In fine condition, circa 1966.
